<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/AD13KC80nKA?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>

When you make a cocos2d app for iOS, there is a boilerplate line in the App Delegate class... goes like this:<br />
<br />
<code>
if( ! [director enableRetinaDisplay:YES] )<br />
CCLOG(@"Retina Display Not supported");
</code>
<br />
<br />
But, uh oh! New iPad is retina, too! I have at least 5 apps using that line of code. That makes the new iPad think it's in retina mode, so the display gets all messed up!<br />
<br />
So here's the fix:<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: monospace;">if(![AppDelegate isIPad]){</span><br />
<span style="font-family: monospace;"> if( ! [director enableRetinaDisplay:YES] ) {</span><br style="font-family: monospace;" /><span style="font-family: monospace;"> CCLOG(@"Retina Display Not supported");</span><br />
<span style="font-family: monospace;"> }</span><br />
<span style="font-family: monospace;">}</span><br />
<br />
You can use your own "isIPad" methodology... I check for the height and width of the screen. Using this line, retina is not enabled for the new iPad, only for the other devices which support it... iPhone 4 and 4s. The next step, of course, would be to enable retina for new iPad and actually supply those double-sized huge graphics, but that's for another day.<br />
<br />
And, even though I'm ready with new updates and have been for several days, only one of the 5 apps I submitted (<a href="http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=492730248&mt=8">Guess Your Songs</a>) has made it through the Apple review queue... and that was after an expedite request ;)<br />
<br />
You can <a href="http://itunes.com/apps/daveworld-inc">find my iOS apps</a> by searching for "daveworld" in the app store.<br />
<br />
Any other snafus people have found getting ready for the new iPad? Any apps expected to misbehave on opening day?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06610775037972220293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8040685891431215194.post-11589211375748506512012-03-13T12:13:00.000-07:002012-03-13T12:17:58.856-07:00Guess Your Songs at GDC Play 2012What a blast! Guess Your Songs hosted a kiosk at GDC Play 2012. It was in San Francisco at the Moscone Center... specifically, Moscone South, in the Esplanade Ballroom, March 6-8. It was a great way to showcase our music interest-based social gaming platform, <a href="http://www.guessyoursongs.com/">Guess Your Songs</a>... it was affordable for our little startup, and it was set apart just enough from the larger Game Developers Conference so that actually interested people were the ones to stop by.<br />

And when I say actually interested people, I mean the sorts of people an Indie game developer wants to meet... investor and big-name company contacts. GDC Play turned out to be exactly the sort of venue where folks are looking to uncover the next great gaming phenomenon.<br />
<br />
If anything, the thing the event seemed to be lacking was press. I suppose that makes sense, since there was the actual Game Developers Conference expo floor right across the street, not to mention Apple's big hub-bub about the new iPad.<br />
<br />
And even without a huge press contingent, we managed to make it into <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zX-R3xhQH4">one full video interview</a> with the fun and talented <a href="http://ohlisa.com/2012/03/10/gdc/">Lisa Oh</a>. Here's that interview:<br />

</div>
We also scored a short video bit on NBC's <a href="http://www.technowtv.com/">TechNow</a> with Scott Budman... the clip isn't posted online yet for that spot (as of the time of this writing). If you happened to be watching the 6:00pm NBC news on March 7th, you probably missed our spot that time you blinked... but we were there ;)<br />
<br />
A few other reviews have popped up as well... for example, Guess Your Songs was recently <a href="http://www.theipaddict.com/imore-picks-of-the-week-for-march-10-2012-29589/#more-29589">featured as an iMore Pick of the Week</a>, and popular blogger Dave Taylor wrote us <a href="http://www.askdavetaylor.com/cool_mobile_app_guess_your_songs.html">a nice review on his site</a>.<br />

I've just completed porting iBridalGown to Android, and I'm really excited about it! It took a few weeks of day-and-night coding and testing, and at the end of that effort, I've been able to launch a great FREE Android app that serves a great purpose for women shopping for a wedding dress.<br />
<br />
<br />
iBridalGown, designed by a bridal salon owner, puts all of
your wedding gown details at your fingertips. It minimizes frustration
and helps you enjoy your wedding gown shopping experience. <br />
<br />
We embraced the Freemium app model for this version so that women everywhere can use iBridalGown, for free, to help organize their wedding dress searches. We also offer an additional paid in app upgrade to access premium features.<br />

I had a situation recently, while porting my <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=Wf0an0o4HbQ&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Fid301995951%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30">iBridalGown for iOS app</a> to Android, where I wanted to send an email with multiple image attachments. As with most Android programming tasks, there were first a few snafus to overcome ;) A couple of the problems I was facing were:<br />
<ol><li>ACTION_SEND actually can only handle one image attachment.</li>
<li>The images were saved in the "private" app directory (the one you get when you call <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">getFilesDir()</span>) , which is problematic when attaching images to emails this way.</li>
<li>There are not many clients that respond to ACTION_SEND which can accommodate text/html content <i>and</i> an attachment, let alone multiple attachments</li>
</ol>So, what did I do? Three problems, three solutions:<br />
<ol><li>I used the ACTION_SEND_MULTIPLE intent, in order to send multiple attachments. </li>
<li>I made temporary copies of the images in external storage before attaching them to the intent.</li>
<li>I made sure only Gmail would be launched, since it is the only app I found which can reliably handle sending text/html and multiple image attachments.</li>
</ol>More details...<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
1. Here's my code to create the Intent with a subject and a message:<br />
<br />
<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"> Intent emailIntent = new Intent(android.content.Intent.ACTION_SEND_MULTIPLE); <br />
emailIntent.setType("text/html"); <br />
String subject = "email subject here";<br />
emailIntent.putExtra(android.content.Intent.EXTRA_SUBJECT, subject); <br />
String body = "<html><body>Here's some <b>HTML</b>content";</div><span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"> emailIntent.putExtra(android.content.Intent.EXTRA_TEXT, Html.fromHtml(body));</span><br />
<br />
2. Next, I add some code that loops through the filenames of the images I want to send, copies them to external storage, then attaches them to the intent: <br />
<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"> emailIntent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_GRANT_READ_URI_PERMISSION); <br />
ArrayList<Uri> uris = new ArrayList<Uri>();<br />
for (String fileName : imageFileNames)<br />
{<br />
String tempFilename = copyPhoto(fileName); //get a temp filename from the copy method<br />
tempFileNames.add(tempFilename); //stored so i can delete the temp files after the send<br />
File myFile = new File(Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory(),tempFilename);<br />
Uri fileUri = Uri.fromFile(myFile);<br />
uris.add(fileUri);<br />
}<br />
emailIntent.putParcelableArrayListExtra(Intent.EXTRA_STREAM, uris);</div><br />
3. Now, some code to limit the app list to Gmail only:<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"> final PackageManager pm = getPackageManager();</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"> final List<ResolveInfo> matches = pm.queryIntentActivities(emailIntent, 0);</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"> ResolveInfo best = null;</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"> for (final ResolveInfo info : matches)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"> if (info.activityInfo.packageName.endsWith(".gm") ||</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"> info.activityInfo.name.toLowerCase().contains("gmail")) best = info;</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"> if (best != null)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"> emailIntent.setClassName(best.activityInfo.packageName, best.activityInfo.name);</span><br />
<br />
And finally, we start the activity: <br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"> startActivityForResult(ACTION_SEND_WITH_IMAGES);</span><br />

For example, in a TextView, I might specify something like this in XML:<br />
<br />
<blockquote style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><TextView <br />
android:id="@+id/headertext"<br />
android:layout_width="wrap_content"<br />
android:layout_height="wrap_content"<br />
android:minHeight="48dip"<br />
android:textSize="24dip"<br />
android:text="My Dresses"<br />
/></blockquote><br />
But what if, within the Activity code, I want to change one of these measurements? There are no Java methods in the Android SDK that accept density independent pixels!<br />
<br />
Well, here's how. Just multiply the size in pixels by a scale factor defined in the context's resources, like so:<br />
<br />
<blockquote style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">float scale = context.getResources().getDisplayMetrics().density; <br />
float size = sizeInPixels * scale; </blockquote><br />
And there's that. I hope it helps :) Please join the conversation with a comment. Blogger will create a post URL automagically using the post title. So, if my post was titled "My post about iPhone programming", I would see a URL like <i>http://blog.daveworld.net/2011/07/my-post-about-iphone-programming.html</i>.<br />
<br />
But sometimes this plan gets thwarted by the length of the title. In fact, if your title is over 40 characters, there's a good chance the URL will be truncated to something that is NOT satisfactorily search engine friendly.<br />
<br />
For example, my last blog entry was titled "How To Follow More Than 2000 People on Twitter". You can see it <a href="http://blog.daveworld.net/2011/07/follow-more-than-2000-people-on-twitter.html">here</a>. <br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
Through trial and error, I had discovered that the URL in its original form was "http://blog.daveworld.net/2011/07/how-to-follow-more-than-2000-people-on.html"... it left out the part about Twitter!!! That's no good :( It happened because the title was too long, and my most important word was at the end!<br />
<br />
Now, notice that the URL for that blog post is actually <i>http://blog.daveworld.net/2011/07/follow-more-than-2000-people-on-twitter.html</i>. The URL is different than the title! How did I make the URL different than the title? <br />
<br />
How to customize your Blogger Post URL:<br />
1. Publish the post with a title under 40 characters. (In the example, I made the title <i>Follow more than 2000 people on Twitter</i>)<br />
2. Check the blog post and make sure u like the URL. (if not, delete the post and try again with another title.)<br />
3. Edit the post and change the title to whatever you like, the URL for the post will not change.<br />
<br />
And there's that. Simple.<br />
<br />
And check out this cool tool called <a href="http://www.tweetadder.com/idevaffiliate/idevaffiliate.php?id=11311">TweetAdder</a> that I use to help automate my Twitter account. It helps me unfollow people who aren't following me back, and it also helps me find qualified followers through targeted searches.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06610775037972220293noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8040685891431215194.post-14117739746909117932011-07-08T11:15:00.000-07:002011-07-08T11:19:24.622-07:00How To Follow More Than 2000 People on TwitterIf you are using Twitter and are trying to follow more than 2,000 people, you may encounter the following message:<br />
"Your account may not be allowed to perform this action. Try logging out and in again."<br />
<br />
Do not despair. What you need to do is get more followers. When you reach around 1850 followers, then you will be able to follow more users.<br />
<br />
So, you may want to unfollow some people you are following who are not following you back.<br />
<br />
I use a tool called <a href="http://www.tweetadder.com/idevaffiliate/idevaffiliate.php?id=11311">TweetAdder</a> to help manage my Twitter followers. It helps me find users who are interested in my Tweets through targeted searches, and it also helps me unfollow users who are not interested in following me back.<br />

Very simple... in your template (Design -> Edit HTML), add the following 2 lines of code just before the closing <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"></head></span> tag:<br />
<br />
<blockquote><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"><link href='http://<i>path-to-your-icon</i>/favicon.ico' rel='shortcut icon' type='image/x-icon'/><br />
<link href='http://<i>path-to-your-icon</i>/favicon.ico' rel='icon' type='image/x-icon'/></span></blockquote><br />
<div>Replace <i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">path-to-your-icon</span></i> with the path to your icon ;) For example, mine is at <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">http://www.daveworld.net/favicon.ico</span>.</div><div><br />
</div><div>Important to note:</div><div>1. put this just before the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"></head></span> tag so it counteracts the auto-generated favicon reference made by Blogger.</div><div>2. be sure to include the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">type='image/x-icon'</span> part, or else this won't work in chrome.</div><div>3. Always back up your template first before making changes this way!</div><div><br />
</div><div>And there's that. Thoughts, comments, questions, feedback, criticisms... all welcome here, post below :)</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06610775037972220293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8040685891431215194.post-71381773972984237412011-05-08T23:37:00.000-07:002011-05-10T11:49:26.478-07:00Dave Schuman on ReverbNationI've posted songs in my <a href="http://www.reverbnation.com/daveschuman">profile at ReverbNation</a>. I love video games. I love making video games and I love playing video games. I grew up with the Atari 2600, Commodore Vic-20, 64 and 128, various iterations of Windows, now Mac and iProducts. I am a fan of all Robotron-style games, an avid lover of Centipede, and I was the guy who could make it all the way through Jungle Hunt (or Jungle King, if you prefer that version).<br />
<br />
These days, with many jobs, a wife and 2 small kids, my gaming is typically limited to the family-friendly variety. So, this review is really geared toward those in a similar situation, looking for the perfect family-friendly console to complement their entertainment setup. Though my wife and I enjoy playing fighting games like Tekken, and I personally enjoy first-person shooters, those are not the sorts of games that are happening in our home. Realistic violence is not what we're looking for right now, period.<br />
<br />
So here goes...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<b>Wii</b><br />
<i>Pros</i> <br />
Wii is awesome because anybody can play it. Whether you are entertaining a 2-year-old or a 72-year-old, everyone can enjoy the Wii. There are plenty of family-friendly games... in fact, the family-friendly selection eclipses the violent collection of games by far. The controllers are easy to use, and the motion control (accelerometer in the controller, basically) is tightly integrated into most games and really fun.<b> </b><br />
<br />
<i>Cons</i><br />
The graphics on Wii games tend to be a bit pixel-y. There's no HD on the current version, so the resolution is simply limited. Occasionally, excess light will get in the way of proper controls, and sometimes the pointing and aiming doesn't work too well. (We recently replaced our Wii after a few years of service, and we found that the new sensor worked MUCH better than the old sensor in this respect.)<br />
<i> </i><br />
<b>PS3</b><br />
<i>Pros</i><br />
PS3 has awesome graphics, HD display, familiar controllers.<i> </i>It has exclusives on games that are really special, like Little Big Planet. The PlayStation Network, though it has been "taken down" recently, is really the highlight of this system. The ability to play games with friends and family over the network, and to do it easily and without having to pay extra, really makes this system a gem. Wonderfully easy and accessible features like Netflix streaming video and YouTube tie the knot on this awesome system. The game selection includes family-friendly games as well as games with more realistic violence and all that... the selection really lends itself to any gamer's situation. AND... it's a freakin' Blu-Ray player! I love my PS3.<br />
<br />
<i>Cons</i><br />
If you want the motion controller (PlayStation Move), you need to fork out the big bucks. I haven't tried it yet, and I probably won't because a) it's a lot of money, and b) the system is fun enough without it.<i> </i>But this is hardly a liability. I love my PS3.<br />
<br />
<b>XBox 360</b><br />
<i>Pros</i><br />
Well, it has great graphics. It has some decent network integration, but only certain features are available without a paid subscription. It has the Kinect motion sensor where you are the controller, which is kinda cool for a little bit... but read on...<br />
<br />
<i>Cons</i><br />
Kinect motion sensor, in my opinion, is an abysmal failure. I bought XBox 360 because of Kinect, and I'm insulted that Microsoft thought that it's ready for market. It's like selling me a prototype for top dollar and hoping that some day someone will come out with a game for it that actually works well enough to float the system. The fact that you have to pay extra for XBox Live Gold just so you can play with friends online is really lame, and the vast majority of the games are of the kill kill die die variety. It's too bad... and yet, they do sell a lot of these units, so I guess someone must like it.<br />
<br />
<i><b>And the winner is...</b></i><br />
If you've read this far, I'm sure it will come as no surprise that, if I were stranded on a desert island with nothing but a big-screen HD TV, a Gamefly account (with a mailbox) and an internet connection, I'd want the PS3 by my side :) It's got the best selection of games, awesome graphics, beautiful integration of technologies... I love my PS3.<br />
<br />
Just my opinions, I'm sure different folks will have some reasons to feel differently, so of course evaluate your own situation before your big console purchase. And there's that.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06610775037972220293noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8040685891431215194.post-23758861867561315542011-04-15T23:26:00.000-07:002011-04-15T23:26:07.599-07:00Bunny's Easter Egg Hop N Drop now available on Android OSJust in time for the springtime holidays, the Android port of Bunny's Easter Egg Hop 'N Drop is ready! <br />
A couple of interesting thoughts about this port from cocos2d-iPhone to cocos2d-Anroid:<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>I use the cocos2d-android-1 port of cocos2d-iphone, which is available at http://code.google.com/p/cocos2d-android-1/. I had to substitute Chipmunk (in iPhone) for Box2d (actually an implementation of jBox2d that was bundled with the cocos2d port). It only took a couple of games, I decided not to integrate OpenFeint in this release, but if the game gains some more traction I'll consider putting it back in. Android dev is a bit of a tough nut following iPhone development... I got spoiled by Apple's lovely proprietary development environment and tools, it's a little tough to go back to open source, but not impossible :) And there's that, for now.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06610775037972220293noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8040685891431215194.post-19604888733191180992011-04-12T11:09:00.000-07:002011-04-12T11:18:15.157-07:00Android app ports have begun... first up, i Pwn UR MomThat's right, I've begun the process of porting my apps to the Android platform. Awesome space shooter game for iPhone and iPad with OpenFeint, Game CenterMy latest game, StarPod, is now <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=Wf0an0o4HbQ&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Fid426262407%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30">available on the app store</a>!<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/K543vflTUYc?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br />
<br />
I really enjoyed making StarPod... it's got rockin' music and cool sound effects, colorful graphics and explosions, plenty of particle systems... it's not a "kid's game" like my previous couple of entries, it's actually a game that i enjoy playing :)<br />
<br />
In StarPod, you are a spaceship being attacked by various types of space-dwelling shape creatures. Enemies include fiery squares, icebursts, insidious triangles, starburst caterpillars, and plasmapillars. You have 2 "D-Pad" style controllers, one on the left to move, and one on the right to fire (a la Robotron, Total Carnage, Geo Wars, etc...). Personally, this is one of my favorite playing configurations, I always like a good game where I can get into a zone of moving with one hand and unleashing destruction with the other.<br />
<br />
There are two basic goals in the game... destroy lots of enemies for points, and stay alive as long as possible without using a Big Bomb. Every 7 seconds you stay alive without the BB, the points multiplier increases. So, the longer you stay alive, the higher your points multiplier will get. Once you use the Big Bomb or get destroyed, though, the points multiplier resets back to 1. When I play, I am focused on staying alive as long as possible, so I rarely use a Big Bomb... I have gotten the points multiplier up past 60x ;)<br />
<br />
This game is fun on iPhone and iPad... on the iPad, the obvious benefit is that there's more D-Pad space, so you will have an easier time seeing on the D-Pad which direction it's pointing. Some players may find it a little tough during the first few plays to remember to keep your thumbs on the D-Pads, but once you do, you will (hopefully) be mesmerized and "in the zone".<br />
<br />
There are a bunch of subtle features designed to keep the game mesmerizing and interesting, including:<br />
- each starfield is created on the fly, and each star twinkles<br />
- each enemy has a distinct spawn sound and a distinct explosion sound. the sounds are panned left or right according to the position of the enemies, and the explosion sounds' pitch is variable depending on the size of the enemy at the time of explosion<br />
- each enemy type has a distinct strategy for getting to you, i wanted to make sure that "camping" in the corner would not be an effective strategy for the game ;)<br />
- powerups, including double shot, triple shot, quad shot, and shields up the ante in terms of destruction unleashed<br />
- if you are cornered, and if you have destroyed enough enemies, you can use the big bomb to blow up all the enemies on the screen and get a fresh start. this is particularly awesome when there are lots of different enemy types on the screens, because each enemy will explode one at a time and play it's sound... so you get a little custom concert along with the big bomb :)<br />
<br />
Enjoy!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06610775037972220293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8040685891431215194.post-68900555407809898222011-03-29T11:56:00.000-07:002011-03-29T11:57:14.673-07:00What Dave can accomplish in a month...Hi, Dave here. I wanted to take a moment to recap all the stuff I accomplished in March. My goals at the beginning of the month were to create as many new iPhone apps as I could, to improve my internet presence and networking, and to make progress on my music. Here's what actually happened:<br />
<br />

I completed and released 4 albums on iTunes, Amazon, Zune etc etc etc! Two of them were previously recorded but never made available this way, and two are brand new compilations of my music I've recorded more recently. The albums are (in descending chronological order):<br />

The ultimate feel-good album from the archetypal feel-good band. From 1994-1998, Liquid Playground played a variety of awesome venues, including Mama Kin's in Boston (owned by Aerosmith's Steven Tyler) and the famous Red Rocks in Morrison, CO. Liquid Playground opened for and performed with artists including Merle Saunders, David Grisman, Disco Biscuits and Ominous Seapods.<br />
<br />
<b>Other</b><br />
In addition to all the apps and music with their associated artwork and marketing tasks, I also completely renovated <a href="http://www.daveworld.net/">my website</a> from scratch, created several Facebook pages for my apps (with Dana's help), and I hooked up <a href="http://blog.daveworld.net/">this blog</a> and started blogging.<br />
<br />
That's a decent list of accomplishments for the month, I suppose.<br />
<br />
But what will I do next month? I doubt if I'll do as much raw development as this month, I'd like to continue concentrating on getting the word out about stuff I've already built (which takes just as much work as building it). I'll also miss a week of April for Passover. I want to port some of my iPhone apps to Android, but I'm at a disadvantage because I am currently Android-less. I want to build something using the free Google App Engine, to see what that experience is like... I've got a site in mind to build there, so maybe I'll do that. I want to make an iPhone app with a free social component. I want to take some time off to enjoy myself before returning to my System Architect job in May. I fear there's so much that I want to do that it'll all just confuse me and I won't get anything done, sigh. We'll see ;)<br />
<br />
Another thing I want to do is post a few tutorials about how I made different aspects of the game StarPod. I think I'll probably get to that.<br />
<br />
And there's that.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06610775037972220293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8040685891431215194.post-11979091663244392852011-03-22T09:25:00.000-07:002011-03-23T22:32:26.710-07:00Memory Leaks, Verizon iPhone weirdness, and what's next...Hi, Dave here.<br />
<br />
I spent a full day yesterday finding and destroying memory leaks in my new iPhone / iPad game "StarPod". And I mean I started at midnight Sunday, took a short nap, then worked on it until it was fixed near 5pm Monday. I ended up submitting and rejecting that app 4 times before its final submission, which I believe now to be the last since I was able to play continuously for 1 hour without the app crashing (an excellent indicator that my work squashing memory leaks was successful). StarPod is a fast and fun space shooter game, I'm excited for it to come out. <br />
<br />
I also have submitted an update for <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=Wf0an0o4HbQ&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Fid423801649%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30">Kickin' Ms. Chicken</a> v1.1... interestingly, the Verizon iPhones are behaving a little differently than the AT&T variety, and of course something I put in Kickin' Ms. Chicken makes VZ iPhones crash (sigh). So, hopefully that will come out in a few days.<br />
<br />
Regarding the Verizon iPhone behaving differently than the AT&T iPhone... I had written a <a href="http://www.netwhisperer.com/2011/01/28/thoughts-about-iphone-on-verizon/">blog entry on www.netwhisperer.com</a> about whether there will be differences for developers between AT&T and Verizon iPhones. I said I didn't think so... guess I was wrong. For all you tech-heads wondering what the specific difference was... The VZ iPhone on iOS 4.2.6 does not appear to support embedding fonts using the UIAppFonts key in the project plist. This functionality has been in iOS since 3.2... maybe it's a bug that'll get fixed... don't know, don't care, since right now I have an app out there that crashes for Verizon iPhone users :(<br />
<br />
I have been on a "sabbatical" from my normal job with <a href="http://www.thought-matrix.com/">ThoughtMatrix</a> for the month of March, and that will continue through the month of April. So what do i do next with this precious time?<br />
<br />
One of the things I'm going to work on is trying to more effectively use my network to promote my apps and music. I'm going to try using Constant Contact to streamline that effort.<br />
<br />
And what else? Do I start porting my iOS apps to Android? Do I port apps / games to Flash / Facebook? Do I simply make more iOS apps? Do I spend some time coming up with the next great social / mobile idea? Time is always against me.<br />
<br />

Great news! My latest game, Kickin' Ms. Chicken, has been approved for sale! It's a fun physics-based game, great for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. You can get it in the app store at this link: <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=Wf0an0o4HbQ&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Fid423801649%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30">Available on the App Store</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilzeztsVb4RB8LVQCI14gmHZc11lbkPKp9wb5M4GpxwYtbPua_EmXH8i2xxXALnDI6esK3KfE3he5sa5aYum71UHGZvBA01t_zkRl31Z8ed3zWYzHkq6bFb-A3kLTwkE-HCOvmA0Gt18-I/s1600/screenpromo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilzeztsVb4RB8LVQCI14gmHZc11lbkPKp9wb5M4GpxwYtbPua_EmXH8i2xxXALnDI6esK3KfE3he5sa5aYum71UHGZvBA01t_zkRl31Z8ed3zWYzHkq6bFb-A3kLTwkE-HCOvmA0Gt18-I/s320/screenpromo.png" width="320" /></a></div><br />
In Kickin' Ms. Chicken, you (and Ms. Chicken) are participating in the County Fair's annual chicken kicking contest.<br />
<a name='more'></a>To play, you drag the boot back and down, then release to kick Ms. Chicken. In order to progress through levels and earn red ribbons, you need to land Ms. Chicken in the bucket (which gets progressively smaller as you go through the stages). In order to earn a blue ribbon for a level, you need to land Ms. Chicken in the bucket AND lay eggs in all the frying pans in one kick.<br />
<br />
But the fun doesn't end with just kicking the chicken in the bucket! Another element to the game is earning points. You can earn extra points by tapping to lay eggs (which is how you hit the frying pans), and also by tapping balloons up in the sky.<br />
<br />
And, yet another element to the game (and the highest scoring and quirkiest part) is the UFO. If you happen to spot a UFO high up in the sky, tap it for a special treat!<br />
<br />
And if that's still not enough fun? The funny announcers and chicken animations and noises will keep you and the family entertained for hours!<br />
<br />
Kickin' Ms. Chicken is a great game for adults and children... you can play it for precise kicks and lots of points, or you can just kick the chicken and pop balloons. However you do it, it's a lot of fun. I really hope you enjoy the game.<br />
<br />
I haven't yet made a gameplay video for this one, I'll try to do that soon.<br />
<br />
Please contact me if you'd like a promo code. If you use a promo code, please do write an honest review in the app store.<br />
<br />
As always, news of an app getting approved makes for a happy Dave :)<br />
Also watch for another new game soon called StarPod, a fun space shooter I'll be submitting for review shortly. <br />
<br />
And there's that.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06610775037972220293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8040685891431215194.post-32578283639084070082011-03-14T09:40:00.001-07:002011-03-23T22:31:35.432-07:00Ms. Chicken's Revenge - Fun and simple game for iPhone, iPad, and iPod TouchHi, Dave here. I've been taking some time lately to program iPhone games. I have been using cocos2d as my game framework, it makes all the important functions of game creation really easy.<br />
<br />
My latest approved game is Ms. Chicken's Revenge. In this game, I use cocos2d with the chipmunk physics engine to produce a game where you catch eggs that Ms. Chicken drops from the top of her barn. The story is that Ms. Chicken is fed up with giving up all her eggs to the farmer, and she's decided that if she can't have them, no one can! So she's laying the eggs right off the edge of the barn...<br />
<br />
You can find Ms. Chicken's Revenge <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=Wf0an0o4HbQ&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Fid419011352%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30">in the App Store</a>.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
The game plays like the old Kaboom!-style games of yesteryear. It also features some great original chicken-bockin' music, including a rendition of Turkey in the Straw, clucked by chickens in four-part harmony :) The game is not overly complex, both from a programming perspective and from a gaming perspective, and can be a quick distraction for adults and kids alike.<br />
<br />
And here's a quick gameplay video. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/rQxj1QMKj8c?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br />
I also put together a website for Ms. Chicken's Revenge...<br />
<a href="http://www.mschickensrevenge.com/">http://www.mschickensrevenge.com</a><br />
and a Facebook page:<br />
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ms-Chickens-Revenge/149097701814795?ref=ts">https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ms-Chickens-Revenge/149097701814795?ref=ts</a><br />
<br />
I'm working on some other games... look for Kickin' Ms. Chicken coming up soon, it's currently being reviewed by Apple and will hopefully be released shortly. I'm also working on a new space shooter, more on that coming up. IMO, the games keep getting better as I move along this path, so I do encourage you to check out upcoming games I'm composing.<br />
<br />
I hope you like Ms. Chicken's Revenge. Thanks for looking!<br />
<br />
And there's that.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06610775037972220293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8040685891431215194.post-92035519935558545932011-03-07T13:46:00.000-08:002011-03-14T08:34:14.202-07:00Rounded Corners with CSSWhile there are a bunch of posts on the topic, this is something I look up around the internet often enough. I'm not going to go into the whole spiel about details of cross-browser support and what-not... and, in general, results on IE may or may not be desirable *sigh*.<br />
<br />
So here's how to make rounded corners with CSS:<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<code><br />
-moz-border-radius: 5px;<br />
-webkit-border-radius: 5px;<br />
border-radius: 5px;<br />
</code><br />
That makes an evenly rounded border with a 5 pixel radius. <br />
<br />
You also have the option of putting in 2 numbers, representing the horizontal and vertical spread of the curve, respectively:<br />
<code><br />
-moz-border-radius: 5px 10px;<br />
-webkit-border-radius: 5px 10px;<br />
border-radius: 5px 10px;<br />
</code><br />
This makes a curve with horizontal component 5p pixels and vertical component 10 pixels.<br />
<br />
And, if you want only the top or only the bottom to be rounded, you can use the following...<br />
<br />
Top Rounded:<br />
<code><br />
-moz-border-radius-topleft: 5px;<br />
-moz-border-radius-topright: 5px;<br />
-webkit-border-top-left-radius: 5px;<br />
-webkit-border-top-right-radius: 5px;<br />
border-top-left-radius: 5px;<br />
border-top-right-radius: 5px;<br />
</code><br />
<br />
Bottom Rounded:<br />
<code><br />
-moz-border-radius-bottomleft: 5px;<br />
-moz-border-radius-bottomright: 5px;<br />
-webkit-border-bottom-left-radius: 5px;<br />
-webkit-border-bottom-right-radius: 5px;<br />
border-bottom-left-radius: 5px;<br />
border-bottom-right-radius: 5px;<br />
</code><br />
<br />
I hope this info saves someone some time!<br />
<br />
And there's that.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06610775037972220293noreply@blogger.com1
